Through this piece, I hoped to communicate the idea of the disappearance of wildlife in the ocean by emptying the scene of the animals which are usually the subject of my work and instead leave only a suggestion of their outline. Try to look closely and find the creatures before scrolling down to see where they are in the next picture. Sorry that the picture quality isn't the best but I will try to post a better one by Wednesday.
Questions While overall I enjoyed making this piece, what bothers me is how flat it looks. Do you have any suggestions to help with this in the future? Should I continue this train of though with drawing or return to painting? Should I add another color such as an orange-ish coral color to make the piece pop or is the monochrome more effective in the context of a fading coral reef?

I absolutely love this! It did take me a second to find the outlines, but I think it would be easier in person, and works well with your content. Craftsmanship wise, it is really well done and highly detailed. I think you did a good job creating depth by layering objects. The use of the gray and white versus bright colors matches the content, but I think maybe using a darker gray/black could lead to a greater range of value and really make some things pop even more.

The composition is very strong and well-crafted. I agree with Helen that the use of black-and-white works well with the content. Pushing contrast with the values would definitely help establish a sense of foreground/background, which I think could add to the overall sophistication of your piece. I agree with your previous post that you should perhaps include a key with where the animals are supposed to be because I struggled to find them! Otherwise, I love the content and how it portrays a nice progression in your work.

I really love this Amelia! I think it is extremely well done and so creative. I would have never thought to "hide" anything in a piece but I love this idea. The one thing I would maybe suggest would be adding a bit more contrast, which kind of addresses your first question regarding flatness. In regards to your third question, I think the monochrome pallet really fits with the content. Overall, very impressive!

Your piece is beautiful, I love the way that you hid the animals in your painting is so creative and really serves to bolster your content. I also love how monochromatic it is. To address your question as to how to make it look less flat, I would research atmospheric perspective and play around with techniques in like your sketchbook until you are satisfied. For the most part I don't think it is really flat, your shading gives it a pretty good sense of depth.

This looks amazing! I didn't see the shapes right away, but I wouldn't add any color or anything to emphasize them. Your craftsmanship great and I love the use of the white, but I think you can push the darker tones a little more to make everything stand out more. Content wise, I don't think adding color would emphasize the content, I think the black and white is really really effective.

This piece amazed me, I absolutely love the concept and how it connects to your body of work. I think the monochrome is super effective and I think added a color might look a little tacky. I personally don't think it looks flat, but pushing the contrast a bit might help a little, like possibly making your background darker if you don't want to go into all of the details. I had some trouble finding the animals until I saw where you outlined them, then it was much clearer. I'm not trying to say they're not clear but I wasn't really sure exactly what I was looking for at first, and I'm not sure if theres a way you can make them slightly more obvious but if you could somehow make the animal shapes pop out a little bit I think that would be beneficial. I'm not sure if that goes against the content though, either way I think its beautiful. The content, craft, and composition is flawless and I'm extremely impressed

This is amazing Amelia!! I love to see how you have chosen to portray your content through the absence of what makes the reefs lively. I think you did a remarkable job in the composition as well as craftsmanship (that light source tho!). I think if you want to make it a bit less static you can eventuate the values and really push some of the darker ones to give a better sense of depth, especially in the reef in the back and the background. I think because of your craft here, it would be worth your time to explore drawing a bit more and see how much you can do! I will say that I didn't get the impression of the animal silhouettes when I was looking at the piece, if there was a way to maybe darken those areas or make the contours a bit more prominent it might help, but overall, great job !!!!
