Head: Environment 6/3/19
The head portion of this assignment portrays a message that I wish to convey and focuses on the content of the work. I chose to focus my content on the environment and how consumerism can negatively impact it. My head intertwines with my heart as I am depicting animals for my heart and promoting conservation for my head.
The Reverence of Consumerism (top), paint, graphite, and plastic utensils, 8.5 by 11 in.
This piece displays how the constant consumption of goods reigns in our society. We constantly use and dispose of goods which can contaminate our environment and pollute the earth. We love the convenience and ease of using disposable goods and all to often do not consider the impact our actions have on our surroundings.
Spill (bottom) plastic bottle, wire, tissue paper, 13 by 18 by 3 in.
I was inspired by a bottle I saw on the ground while I was hiking on Bell Isle. It was nestled among swirling ivy and the plant had grown inside and over the plastic bottle, causing the bottle to be trapped in the undergrowth. This piece is a representation of that image, showing how our presence on this earth is closely intertwined with nature. Everything that we as humans do manipulates our surroundings, often for an extended period of time, so it is important that we respect nature and do our best to minimize our negative impact on it. Overall, I'm not a big fan of the piece. It looks a bit crafty but I needed to do a sculpture and this is what evolved from that constraint.

Heart: Animals 6/5/19
The heart portion of this assignment displays what we love to create. I chose to focus on the subject of animals because I love the process of depicting them and I am usually pretty happy with the results. The animals just look so cute and make me feel happy.
Solomon (left) acrylic paint on canvas, 8 by 12 in.
I named this guy after a tiny sloth stuffed animal and I chose to paint him because he seemed very calm and soothing. With all the stress of the end of the school year, I just wanted to create something that would be relaxing. I decided to paint him blue because brown seemed to boring and blue is a chill color. There are parts that are a bit messy, but I am happy with the result in the time that I had.

I got this toned paper and I was excited to create something in a similar style to the old master project. I chose to draw an elephant because I thought all of the wrinkles and folds would be fun to create. I wanted to capture the sort of melancholy look of the animal by emphasizing the shadows and lines of the face. I might add white highlights in the future but at the moment I am a little apprehensive about it.
